Presi-torial

Here is a conversation overheard in the Granta between the President and the Editor as they sat in a dark comer of the pub late in the evening. The former had just finished his seventh pint, and the latter was just starting his eighth; this is what they said:

President [wicked gleam in his eye] :
How's the journal coming on these days, Pat?
Journal Editor [muttering into his beer] :
It's nearly finished, but no thanks to the lazy **!!??'s who never contributed anything. I had to write half of it myself.
Pres :
Aye, and I the other half! But be fair, the '85 Austria stuff was written by other people.
Ed :
True, it was very good.
Pres :
There's also the silver slipper team...
[awed silence from those around]
they did some nice articles.
Ed :
Also true. Ahyway, it's nearly finished, I've just the presi-torial to complete.
Pres :
The presi-torial? I'd rather have the presidentorial as its title.
Ed :
No, I prefer presi-torial. I'm the editor after all, not you.
Pres :
Well, why did it take so long to come out, this journal?
Ed :
Well, first of all, all the computer scientists disappeared into lucrative jobs with IBM so we didn't know how to work the computer.
Pres :
Oh yes, and the last editor joined the brain drain and went to America.
Ed :
A sad case...
Pres :
Indeed.
Ed :
Plus the fact that there wasn't an expedition in 1986. It didn't seem worth producing another journal for a non-existent expedition. But now I've tamed the computer and it's all under control.
Pres :
But some bits are printed differently.
Ed :
Ah, yes ... I couldn't work out how to get around that.
[After such a long conversation, they both wet their throats again with a long draught of beer.]
Ed :
I hope more people contribute next year.
Pres :
Well, there are lots of new active members, I'm sure they'll have lots to write about.
Ed [Cynically] :
Don't be too sure...

[At this point, last orders is announced, and the President and Editor, having heard the word 'last' and supped the remainder of their ale before the word 'orders' had been completed, made their way towards the bar once again.]

P.S. For those who don't know, the President is Patrick Warren, and the Editor is ..... Patrick Warren.

I would like to thank all of the contributors and people who helped especially Jo Greaney for proof reading, and Mike Richardson for doing the printing.
